What does 5 ATM mean?
What does 5 ATM mean? 5 ATM means that a watch is water resistant to a pressure of 5 atmospheres. 5 atmospheres stands for a water depth of approx. 50 meters. So in principle you can swim, shower and if raindrops fall on your watch then this is no problem. Be careful with sudden temperature changes!

With every Urban Ace watch you can: swim, shower and if raindrops fall on your watch, that's no problem!
Can you swim with a 5 ATM watch?
In daily practice, this means that a watch with a water resistance of 5 ATM is well-resistant to everyday water activities. You can wear your Urban Ace watch while washing your hands, showering, and swimming in shallow water. The watch also offers sufficient protection against rain and splash water. So YES. If you would like to swim with an Urban Ace watch, you can! PLEASE NOTE: Not too deep! And be careful with sudden temperature changes. For example, lying in the sun and suddenly getting into the water. Then a watch cools down very quickly and this is not good for your watch. If you plan to go snorkeling, take off your watch for a while.
Here are some everyday applications that a 5 ATM watch is suitable for:
- Rain on the watch: Resistant to unexpected rain showers and splashes.
- Washing hands (splash water on the watch): Can be held under running water without any problem.
- Showering with the watch: Resistant to water jets while showering.
- Swimming with your watch: Suitable for swimming in pools or calm water, such as a lake.

While the watch is suitable for these everyday water activities, it is not designed for more intense water sports or diving where it is exposed to higher water pressures. This means that the watch is not suitable for activities such as scuba diving, water skiing, snorkeling, or other sports that involve being underwater for long periods of time or moving quickly through water, which may significantly increase the pressure on the watch.
What does ATM mean?
ATM means atmosphere. ATM is a unit often used in the 'watch world' to measure the water resistance of watches. The number of atmospheres basically indicates how much pressure a watch can withstand under water. If you go above this number of atmospheres... then water may enter the watch.
5 ATM waterproof swimming?
Can you swim with a 5 ATM watch? YES you can. Also with a 3 ATM watch or higher. The ATM basically indicates how deep you can dive.
Here is an overview of the general water resistance classes for watches:- 3 ATM (30 meters): Resistant to rain and splashes, but not suitable for swimming or submerging your watch in water.
- 5 ATM (50 meters): Suitable for showering and swimming in shallow water. Attention: Not too deep!
- 10 ATM (100 meters): Suitable for swimming and snorkeling, but not for deep sea diving.
- 20 ATM (200 meters): Suitable for professional divers, water sports enthusiasts and recreational diving.
- 30 ATM (300 meters) and above: Suitable for deep sea diving.

10 ATM water resistant meaning
All Urban Ace watches are suitable for 5 ATM. Not for 10 ATM. The meaning of 10 ATM is nothing more than 100 meters under water. Watches with a 10 ATM indication can be worn during most forms of water sports, such as swimming, diving in the pool, snorkeling or sailing, but avoid large temperature differences in the water. Take the watch off with recreational and deep-sea diving.
How is it determined whether a watch can withstand this pressure?
Watches are often tested in ideal conditions. So take into account swimming a bit 'deeper'. In principle, an Urban Ace watch could go up to a depth of 50 meters under water! But note that these are ideal conditions. The pressure on such a watch is often the same. If you swim a bit deeper, the pressure on the watch is different, which can lead to water in your watch.
For example, do you have a watch that only has 3 ATM? Then in practice this should be possible up to 30 meters under water. But these should be perfect conditions. But if you go swimming with this watch, the varying pressure could already cause water to enter the watch. That is why Urban Ace watches are suitable up to 5 ATM. Do pay attention to temperature differences. A large difference in temperature does not do a watch any good. If you lie in the sun with a watch, the temperature can rise to 50°C on a watch or warmer. If you go swimming, the temperature is suddenly lower... this is not good for a watch, so take this into account.
Tips to keep your watch waterproof!
If you buy a watch to go diving professionally, an Urban Ace watch is unfortunately not suitable. But in principle, water and our watches go well together. However, we do have a few tips that you can take into account:
- Is there a scratch somewhere? Then watch out with water... it can cause the watch to leak.
- Salty sea water? Don't do it... Rinse your watch immediately with fresh, clean tap water.
- Be careful with chlorinated water or other chemicals. This is often not the best for a watch.
- Are you going into a sauna? Take off your watch. The temperature differences are often too big for a watch.
Conclusion 5 ATM watch
A watch with an ATM 5 water resistance is strong enough for your daily activities. Rain? No problem... Showering? No problem... Are you really planning to go snorkeling with your watch? Then it is wise to buy a watch with e.g. a 10 ATM indication!
